Abstract:

Food adulteration is done in various forms. The most common adulteration in sesame oil is done with adding by sunflower oil, corn oil and hazelnut oil. This study examines the pure sesame oil using DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY (DSC) analysis deals. Samples of pure sesame oil, 5%, 10% and 15% corn oil and sunflower oil was mixed with sesame oil. With the increase of corn oil and sunflower oil, sesame oil, peak displaced towards lower temperatures and the temperatures start, maximum and end of both large and small melting peak was reduced. According to the triglycerides of saturated fatty acids at higher temperatures than triglycerides with unsaturated fatty acids are melted. The peak shift toward lower temperatures can be increased by addition of unsaturated lipid components of corn and sunflower oils.

Abstract:

LIQUID CRYSTALS EXHIBIT UNIQUE PHASE TRANSITIONS AND THERMAL PROPERTIES THAT MAKE THEM USEFUL FOR A NUMBER OF POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS. LIQUID CRYSTALS COMMONLY ARE USED TO MANUFACTURE LCD SCREENS FOR DISPLAYS IN COMPUTERS, TVS, AND WATCHES. THEY ARE ATTRACTIVE MATERIALS FOR FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH BECAUSE OF THEIR STRUCTURAL, TRANSITIONAL, THERMAL, ORIENTATIONAL, OPTICAL, AND PHOTOACOUSTIC PROPERTIES. ONE OF THE LIQUID CRYSTALS HEPTYLCYANOBIPHENYL (7CB), HAS DRAWN CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION IN RESEARCH REGARDING ITS PROTOTYPICAL THERMOTROPIC NATURE IN PHASE TRANSITION STUDIES. IN THE PRESENT WORK, THE HEATING RATE EFFECT ON THE PHASE TRANSITIONS OF A PURE LIQUID CRYSTAL HEPTYLCYANOBIPHENYL (7CB) HAS BEEN STUDIED USING DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY (DSC) TECHNIQUE. THE DSC RUNS WERE TAKEN AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURE RAMP RATES FROM 20 TO 1K/MIN FOR HEATING AND COOLING SCANS. WELL-DEFINED ENDOTHERMIC/EXOTHERMIC PEAKS WERE FOUND AT THE MELTING/CRYSTALLIZATION, AND NEMATIC TO ISOTROPIC (N-I) TRANSITIONS ON HEATING/COOLING SCANS, RESPECTIVELY. ALL TRANSITIONS SHIFT IN TEMPERATURE SIGNIFICANTLY WITH DIFFERENT RAMP RATES.THE TEMPERATURE SHIFT OF CP PEAKS BETWEEN HEATING AND COOLING SCANS INDICATES THE ORDER OF THE TRANSITIONS.IN ADDITION, ALL TRANSITIONS FOLLOW AN ARRHENIUS BEHAVIOR. THE ACTIVATION ENERGY OF A TRANSITION INCREASES AS THE TOTAL ENERGY INVOLVED IN THE TRANSITION DECREASES. THE RESPECTIVE ENTHALPY AND ENTROPY CHANGE OF EACH TRANSITION PROVIDES INFORMATION ON THE GIBBS FREE ENERGY. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESULTS IS DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF THE ORDER OF TRANSITIONS.

Abstract:

Polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels were synthesized by partial cross-linking of PAAm using p-formaldehyde as curing agent. The cross-linking reaction was studied using DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING calorimeter (DSC) and cure kinetics was determined. The dynamic DSC scans of freshly mixed reaction mixture that showed an endothermic peak corresponding to cure at 75±1° C, indicate multiple reactions. The FTIR studies of curing reactions indicated that alkaline hydrolysis of PAAm was also occurring during curing as evident by generation of carboxylic group in the cured PAAror hydrogels. In the initial phase of cross-linking reaction and at lower temperature rapid hydrolysis occurred which was endothermic in nature, but at higher temperature curing reaction was favoured. Isothermal cure kinetics revealed that curing reaction was n th order type and followed third order kinetics. The study also indicates that with the degree of conversion 0 .25-0.26. both curing and hydrolysis occurs simultaneously but at higher conversions curing reaction proceedes alone. The swelling studies also indicates that the swelling index of PAAm hydrogels increases with decreasing curing agent concentration: but increases with increasing swelling duration and curing time, and molecular weight of polymer.

Abstract:

For formulation of new products or reformulation of existing ones, it is wise to know possibility of any interaction of drug-drug or drug additive, which will affect the stability of final product. In this study, first thermograms of aspartame and each drug were prepared individually, then thermograms of an equal mixture of drug and aspartame was drug prepared and compared with the pure and aspartame thermograms.DSC thermograms of chloropheniramine and phenylephrine showed a deformation and shift in the peak indicating probable interaction while acetminophen and sulphamethoxazole had no changes in their thermograms, therefore no interaction between aspartame and those drugs can exist.

Abstract:

Rice cooking and eating quality are the most important factors for accepting a variety by consumers. To determine the accurate gelatinization properties of rice starch with Little and DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING Calorimeter (DSC) methods, this research was carried out on 10 Iranian rice varieties. All varieties were similar in amylose content and gelatinization score with Little method. The starch properties such as gelatinization enthalpy (DH), onest temperature (T0), peak temperature (Tp), conclusion temperature (Tc) were measured by using of the curve derived from DSC. Analysis of variance showed significant differences between studied varieties for gelatinization parameters obtained from DSC method, but there weren’t the significant differences between varieties for gelatinization scores derived from Little’s method. The maximum and minimum enthalpy (DH) was observed in Domsorkh (11.48 j/g) and Hasssansaraee varieties (6.44 j/g), respectively, but Domsorkh and Hassansaraee varieties had similar scores for alkali spreading values from the Little’s method. In varieties with the same amylose content, lipid-amylose complex increase crystalline structure of starch so enthalpy for gelatinization will be increased. Data analysis showed that there was significant correlation between lipid content and enthalpy at 5% probability level. In mean comparisons between varieties, the minimum and maximum onest temperature (T0) were observed in Domsefid (64.82oC) and Domsiah (67.7oC) varieties, respectively. Also, there was the significant correlation between onest temperature and lipid content. Results from current research showed that the Little’s method is a rapid and economical method for selecting lines and varieties with suitable gelatinization properties (3-5 score), but DSC method can explain more details of cooking differences between varieties where Little’s method is unable to explain them.

Abstract:

In this study, we investigated the effect of using large TiO2 nanoparticles in the matrix of small nanoparticles to improve the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), as light scatter to increase the light harvesting. The mixed powder was deposited by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) on FTO (F-SnO2 coated glass). It is shown that adding small quantity of larger nanoparticles can enhance the performance of DSSCs. This paper also studies the deferential SCANNING CALORIMETRY (DSC) of mixed powders to detect the phase transitions, due to the change of weight percentage between large and small nanoparticles.

Abstract:

The compound, alkaline lead acetate, Pb (CH3COO)2 PbO H2O (ALA), was purchased from the Fluka Company. The X-ray diffraction film and SEM electron microgaph of this compound were obtained and reported in this paper for the first time. The thermal behavior of alkaline lead acetate (ALA) was studied using thermogravimetery (TGA) and DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING Calorimetery (DSC) techniques under an O2 gas atmosphere from 25 to 600oC. Four distinct energy changes associated with weight changes were observed, all of them being exothermic in the DSC results. The amount of DH for each peak is reported.

Abstract:

Background and Aim: Extent of polymerization (Ep) is the rate at which methacrylate C=C bonds are converted to aliphatic C-C bonds. The higher the Ep value, the better the polymerization of the polymer. If the polymer dose not polymerize sufficiently, it could have destructive effects e.g. releasing monomer, initiator, free radical or insufficient polymerization of hybrid layer. Therefore, measuring the Ep value is very important. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are becoming increasingly popular in dental practice as they have a long life expectancy. LEDs do not generate infrared wavelength, and have a constant light output. Therefore, comparison of LED and Quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) from the point of Ep is important. DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY (DSC) is a proper tool for determining the Ep value, monitoring the process of reaction and reaction kinetics. The aim of this study was to measure the Ep value of a dental bonding containing camphorquinone/amine photoinitiator which were cured by LED and QTH using DSC.Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 2.5 mg of bonding material were placed in DSC aluminum pans. Two different light cures, LED & QTH (Coltene Company Coltolux ®75 LED Curing Light), were used in this study. The light guide was positioned at a distance of 9mm from the base of the sample chamber. Each sample was photopolymerized for 30 seconds, and the DSC curves were obtained after 100 seconds from initiation of photopolimerization of each sample, at both 23°C and 37°C. The heat of photopolymerization (DH) was calculated from the area under the peak of the DIFFERENTIAL temperature curve. Five samples were used for each condition. The data was analyzed by two-way ANOVA.Results: There was highly significant difference between two temperatures in the experimental bonding (pvalue<0.001). Representative DSC curves showed the same kinetic behavior for LED and QTH.Conclusion: The results revealed that the Ep generated by high power density QTH was the same as that of produced by second generation of LED.
